The SDLP’s Colin McGrath MLA has welcomed news that the Royal County Down golf course is to receive an upgrade to its championship course, citing hopes to see the Open Championship finally come to Newcastle.
Commenting, the South Down MLA said, “The news that Royal County Down is seeking to upgrade its championship course is extremely welcome and represents a hugely positive development for Newcastle and the wider Mournes area.
“Royal County Down is already recognised as one of the finest golf courses in the world, and we saw with the Irish Open in 2024 just how much major golfing events can bring to our town.
“The prospect of these improvements potentially paving the way for The Open Championship to come to Newcastle is particularly exciting. Hosting one of the biggest events in world golf would be an enormous achievement, bringing international attention, visitors and significant economic opportunities for our local hospitality and tourism businesses.
“Of course, there is still a considerable amount of work to be done before that could become a reality, but this is a very welcome step in the right direction.
“Newcastle already has so much to offer, from our stunning coastline and the Mourne Mountains to our outstanding hospitality. Investment like this will only help cement its reputation as a world centre for golf.
“I congratulate everyone involved in bringing these proposals forward and hope that, in the years ahead, we might see the world’s greatest golfers competing for the Claret Jug right here in South Down.”
