Irish American Organizations Respond to President Trump’s Support for Irish Unity

On his recent visit to Ireland, United States President Donald Trump told reporters that he “would love to see (Ireland) unified,” and added, “it may as well happen now.” He continued, “…it just seems to me that you have Northern Ireland and you have Ireland and it would seem to me that one of the naturals all time is put them together.”

The following day he added, “…it just seems to me that you have Northern Ireland and you have Ireland and it would seem to me that one of the naturals all time is put them together.”

Leaders of Irish American organizations welcomed the developments and spoke in support of the President’s statements

Ancient Order of Hibernians

“…The Ancient Order of Hibernians therefore calls for President Trump’s welcome remarks to be followed by renewed American engagement, including the appointment of a U.S. Special Envoy for Northern Ireland. We further call upon the British Government to establish and publish a clear and transparent process for assessing when the statutory conditions for a border poll have been met.

“President Trump has expressed his view. British Prime Minister Burnham and the Northern Ireland Secretary have expressed theirs.

“The final decision does not belong to any of them.

“It belongs to the Irish people, it is time to give them the mechanism to express it.”

Irish American Unity Conference

“The Irish American Unity Conference applauds President Trump’s endorsement of Irish Unification. At today’s joint press conference with Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin, the President said that he would love to see Ireland united. We agree with the President’s statement that unification would be “fantastic.”

“Equally important, the President strongly urged the Irish Government to advance unification now. Gesturing toward the Taoiseach, Trump said that Martin was “the right man over here to get it moving.” The IAUC has long advocated that the Irish Government must plan for unification by holding forums to provide information and encourage discussion. So far, Taoiseach Martin has rejected all such suggestions, going so far last month to say that he “goes bananas” when his own party members talk of unity. We encourage the Taoiseach to reflect on that statement in light of the President’s direct comments.”
