President Sandi Swift stated, “After reading Micheál Martin’s statement about how he believes the subject of Irish unity can be advanced, I had to read it twice. It wasn’t that long ago, in August, that he stated he was not willing to pursue a border poll. I would like to believe that his latest statement reflects a genuine commitment to moving the conversation forward. However, the work that has already been done over the years should not be ignored or overlooked. Instead, it should be recognized, built upon, and incorporated into any efforts to advance the cause of unity.
With everything currently happening in the North of Ireland, and the support that has been expressed, one cannot help but hope that the benefits of a united Ireland will help ensure that we “never go back.” The plan for Irish unity, referenced in the Good Friday Agreement, has been in the works for many years. That groundwork should be acknowledged and used as a foundation for moving forward, rather than treating the process as though it is only just beginning.”
The LAOH is committed to the peaceful reunification of Ireland. As Irish Americans and Americans of Irish descent, we believe that discussion and preparations for Irish Unity are essential. The LAOH is encouraged that the Irish Government will be establishing a path forward to plan for reunification.
