Time to Seize ‘Historic Opportunity’ and Begin Preparations for Irish Unity

Sinn Féin MP Dáire Hughes has said that preparations and planning for Irish unity is now a matter of common sense and an imperative that any responsible government should accept.

Speaking as a new ‘EU sentiment’ poll showed more than 60% on the island would vote for a united Ireland, the Newry and Armagh MP said, “As the government in London continues to fail citizens on this island, more and more people are looking towards constitutional change and a better future in a united Ireland.

“Irish unity would unlock the untapped potential of our people, enabling us to shape a new country from the ground up that is built for workers and families to thrive in.

“We can ensure young people no longer need to leave these shores in search of better opportunities, public services are properly funded and that we have a dynamic economy that works for all.

“The Irish government needs to recognise the historic opportunity that now exists and act responsibly by beginning the preparations to ensure that constitutional change is planned and managed responsibly.

“Sinn Féin will bring forward legislation to the Dáil before the summer requiring the Irish government to begin planning and preparations.”
