Out of the Mailbag, Comes Songs and Stories

I often say I was raised on songs and stories, even before dad started Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival in 1982, our life was filled with live Irish music, legends in songs and stories. Not too far into the festival, Cherish the Ladies became a staple headliner, and still are. Heidi Talbot is a singer I fell in love with through her touring with Cherish. Vibrancy, voice, presentation, and yes, grace. Grace Untold is Heidi’s ninth studio album.

Her best yet? I think so. I certainly love it. Grace Untold will be released on November 21st; let me know, what do you think?

“I suppose it is for the Song Grace O’Malley, but also for the other meanings of Grace – of something coming true. … of powerful women in Irish history that I felt resonated with me. … It’s been three years since I recorded my last album. I hadn’t felt like recording new music. I hadn’t felt like [it was] time.

“They’ve come to me, with their stories, and I believe I am telling their stories, for them, in a way. I felt like these songs or these stories had been told to me. This was my way to pass them on to you.”

Respect for women and their contributions have long been overdue. Music may now be a bit ahead in the field. Talbot has been nominated for BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year; Best Traditional Song; Best Live Act at the Scottish Traditional Music Awards; and Best Female Vocalist at the Irish Music Awards. In 2023, she was named Composer of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards.

Grace Untold is Highly Recommended, a Top Shelf Selection, one that I will return to, again and again.
