Tiptoe Through the Turnips

While St. Patrick’s Day is the most famous Irish celebration, Halloween has always been a quintessential Irish holiday to me. The pieces parts of legend, folklore, roots to today, gatherings with a load of mystery parried into a reason to party that includes something for everyone, no matter the age or the tolerance for scary – are dropped into the blender from a great recipe for so many opportunities for gathering.

The abrupt change from summer mode and weather to fall and football – there really are only two seasons here anymore – Cold or Warm, Summer or Winter, is embraced in cosmetic costume and live one last ball, before the dark season descends. We’ve got stories of the season within, What’s the Craic? to not miss, and a great explanatory on all those political parties in Ireland, especially helpful as the talk of a United Ireland continues to grow in Ireland and across the world.

The memorial mass this year was sparsely attended, as the ownership and administration of the land where the memorial has sat for all of its 25 years has changed hands from County ownership to the city of Cleveland, and now administered by the Cleveland Metroparks, leading to confusion and misinformation. No decision has been made on the future of the monument, the memorial mass or any other aspect of it, despite what others may have planned or said.

The original founding members still with us, of which I am proudly a member, will be meeting in the days ahead to discuss and decide on a path forward, given these and other changes to the area. We will be sure to let you know where the deliberations lead us, so watch these pages for updates.

There is so much more inside.
