Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF)’s 50th Anniversary Opening Night on April 9, Plus so Much More

Marking 50 Years of Film, Culture, and Community in Cleveland

For 10 days this April, Cleveland will take center stage as a hub for global storytelling and independent film as the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF) celebrates its 50th anniversary. This milestone year is set to deliver its most dynamic program yet. The Festival officially kicks off April 9, 2026, with Opening Night, presented by Dollar Bank, featuring the documentary A Man with Sole: The Impact of Kenneth Cole, directed by Dori Berinstein, with Kenneth Cole also in attendance.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 50 years of the Cleveland International Film Festival with the community that has supported and shaped us along the way,” said Hermione Malone, Executive Director of CIFF. “This milestone is not only a reflection of our history, but a celebration of where we’re headed – continuing to bring people together through powerful storytelling, shared experiences, and a deep connection to Cleveland’s vibrant arts and culture scene.”

This year’s film lineup includes:

  • 326 total films from 57 countries
  • 90 feature films (56 narratives, 34 documentaries)
  • 236 short films
  • 53 World Premieres
  • 25 U.S. Premieres
  • 66 Midwest Premieres

What to Expect at CIFF50 Opening Night

Opening Night begins with a VIP reception from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at Encore Cocktail Bar, offering an intimate opportunity to connect with filmmaker Dori Berinstein and Kenneth Cole. VIP tickets are $150 and include the reception (open bar and light bites), film screening, and afterparty. General admission tickets are $50, with the screening and afterparty taking place at the State Theatre at Playhouse Square.

Guests can also enjoy interactive lobby activations, including a hands-on printmaking experience with Zygote Press, a complimentary chocolate tasting and prize drawing from Sweet Designs Chocolatier of Lakewood, and a charm bar hosted by Oceanne, CIFF50’s exclusive jewelry partner.

A Story That Sets the Stage: A Man with Sole

The opening night feature, A Man with Sole, explores the life and legacy of fashion designer and activist Kenneth Cole, whose career has long bridged the gap between commerce and conscience. From his early advocacy during the HIV/AIDS crisis to his ongoing work supporting LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness, Cole has used his platform to prove that business can drive meaningful social change. Director Dori Berinstein and Kenneth Cole will participate in a post-film Q&A, offering audiences a rare, firsthand look at the story behind the film and the impact behind the brand.

“I’m eager for our community to experience the incredible lineup of films our local team of programmers has selected for our 50th festival,” said Paul Sloop, Director of Programming for CIFF. “What excites me most is the range of stories we’re bringing to Cleveland –  from powerful documentaries like A Man with Sole to daring new voices and unforgettable narratives from around the world. This year’s program underscores CIFF’s growing reputation as a destination for discovering new voices and experiencing independent film at its most impactful.”
