KID’S CRAIC ~ Happy Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a special day to celebrate all dads and father figures. It started a long time ago in the United States. A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea in 1909.

She wanted to honor her dad, who raised her and her five brothers and sisters all by himself after their mom died. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

People liked the idea of Father’s Day, and it slowly became popular in other places. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father’s Day. It was not until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson made a special proclamation to honor fathers.
He chose the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a law-making Father’s Day a national holiday.

In Ireland, Father’s Day also has connections to St. Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary. Although his feast day is in March, he is often remembered during Father’s Day celebrations as a model of fatherhood.

Father’s Day is widely celebrated in Ireland, but it is not an official public holiday. It is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, like many other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. Many Irish families enjoy special meals, either at home or in restaurants, and engage in activities that make dads feel cherished and appreciated.
