Dorothy “Dort” Byrne

April 8th, 2024

Dorothy “Dort” Byrne Obituary (née Deibel), age 89, of Columbus, passed away on April 8, surrounded by family.

Dorothy Ann was born on August 12, 1934, in Columbus, Ohio, the eldest child of Richard Deibel and Mary “Sally” McKinley Deibel. She was later joined by younger siblings Robert, Barbara, and Diane. Dort attended St. Leo and Corpus Christi grade schools, and St. Joseph’s Academy, graduating in 1952. She married Murdith P. Byrne on July 24, 1954, in Columbus, Ohio, started a family, and had eight children. Over the years, Dort worked at Holy Cross, Baumann’s Plumbing, and Maghie & Savage Construction. She was a devout Catholic and active in Cursillo, generously giving her time to bring Communion to those unable to attend Mass. Dort was also a member of the Shamrock Club of Columbus, where she served as the Grand Marshal in the 2011 St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

She enjoyed playing euchre and having a beer with family and friends. She was proud to tell strangers that her boys ran Byrne’s Pub in Grandview.

In her high school yearbook, her classmates described her as “Dort, whose heart is true and kind” and a friend who “never missed a party.” These quotes embodied her throughout her life. She will be remembered for her honesty, quick wit, and kind heart.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband Murt of forty-two years, and brother Bob Deibel. Dorothy is survived by her sisters Barbara Howiler and Diane Knipp and her loving children: Colleen Byrne (John Bevilacqua), Timothy Murt Byrne, Thomas Byrne (Dana), Mollie Cummins (Michael), Patrick Byrne (Molly), Katie Cotter (Eddie), Rick Byrne (Julie), and Brian Byrne (April). Also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Jane Bornhorst (Rick), Murdith Byrne (Irene), Erin Byrne (Nate Blake), Meghan Byrne, Mallory Castel (David), Moira Thuney (Zach), Michaela Cummins (Tate Hughes), Connor Cummins, Rory Byrne Cotter, Maeve Cotter (Seth Hartness), Malia Hatico-Byrne (Anum Awan), Jose Byrne, Allyson Halderman (Logan), Caitlin Marstrell (Keene), Samantha Gehring (Brad), Julio Byrne, Jack Byrne, James Byrne, Campbell Byrne, Angel Emmerling (Brian), Lisa Lewis (Joe), Gina Erickson (Ross), John Bevilacqua, Katie Florin (Scott), Emily Body (Eric), and Jerry (her cat). Dort was a proud great-grandmother to fifteen, with another due in July. Dort also leaves behind several loving nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in memory of Dort to the Shamrock Club of Columbus.
