Ireland has formed a new government, with Micheál Martin appointed as the new Taoiseach (Prime Minister). In their newly published Programme for Government, the government has highlighted a commitment to strengthening and expanding Ireland’s relationships with state legislators across the United States. The American Irish State Legislators Caucus has welcomed the inclusion of this commitment by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland, having collaborated with the department over recent years on various initiatives, including visits to Ireland by several Caucus members.

“Honour of my life” - US Ambassador to Ireland steps down
Claire D. Cronin, the US Ambassador to Ireland and former Majority Leader for the, Massachusetts House of Representatives., stepped down on January 19, ahead of the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Appointed by President Joe Biden, Ambassador Cronin began her term in February 2022 and described her role as “the honour of a lifetime.” During her tenure, she strengthened US-Irish ties through initiatives that promoted economic collaboration, cultural exchange, and educational links, while also celebrating 100 years of US-Irish diplomatic relations.
Ambassador Cronin highlighted achievements such as Ireland’s rise from the 9th to the 7th largest investor in the US and the success of the Embassy’s Open Doors Series. With deep Irish roots, the Massachusetts native previously served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
Edward Walsh, a New Jersey businessman, was nominated by President Trump to succeed Ambassador Cronin, pending Senate confirmation. Until then, Michael Clausen was is interim Ambassador.
