Whisky, Whiskey, Scotch, Uisge beatha: What do you call it?

Scotch Whisky is enjoyed worldwide but did you know Scots and European law states that whisky can only be described as Scotch Whisky if it has been distilled and matured in Scotland for at least three years? Uisge beatha means “water of life” in Gaelic. Gradually, it was shortened to uisge and became whisky. Whiskey refers to Irish and American varieties.
Let’s not forget our own Canadian whisky. Canadian whisky is also regulated and must age in small, wooden barrels for at least three years in Canada. Sadly, you can’t set up your own still in the shed without a federal permit!
Whether you like your whisky neat, on the rocks or with a splash of water, it is meant to be shared, celebrated and savoured.
