Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Joseph Patrick Boyle

(January 20, 1935 – June 2, 2024)

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, Joseph Patrick Boyle, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at his home in Hudson, Florida, at the age of 89, surrounded by his family.

A Life Rooted in Ireland and Flourished in America

Joe was born on January 20, 1935, in Carrick, County Donegal, Ireland, to John Boyle (1893-1976) and Bella Meehan (1902-1952).

Joe’s life journey serves as a beacon of hope for anyone wishing to immigrate and pursue the American dream. Raised in the windswept northwest corner of Ireland, Joe was one of eight children. His modest upbringing was rich with childhood stories of playing Gaelic football, cutting turf in the bog, attending school, and engaging in general mischief.

In October 1956, at the age of 21, Joe left Ireland and immigrated to the United States on the passenger ship TSS New York, following his brother John and sister Mary. Upon arrival at New York City’s Ellis Island, he made his way to Cleveland, Ohio.

Building a Life in Cleveland

Joe quickly integrated into the Irish American community in Cleveland and joined St. Patrick’s Gaelic Football Team. He played and coached for St. Patrick’s for the next 30 years. Joe also joined the Ohio National Guard and served for six years. He became a United States citizen in 1960.

Around the same time, Joe began his career at Lincoln Electric Company, where he worked his way up from unloading railroad cars by hand to retiring as a general inspector at the age of 62.

A Family Man

In 1959, Joe met Margaret, his future wife, at a Cleveland West Side Irish American Club function. They married on August 4, 1962, and moved to Euclid, Ohio, where they raised four children: Tom, Joe, Tina, and Sheila.

In 1971, Joe and Margaret moved the family to Dublin, Ireland, to be closer to Joe’s younger brother Tommy, who had been severely injured in a car accident. After five years in Stillorgan, Ireland, the family returned to Euclid, Ohio, in 1976.

Joe and Margaret moved part-time to Hudson, Florida, in 2004, where they enjoyed their later years together.

Legacy and Loved Ones

Joe was preceded in death by:

  • His father, John (1893-1976), and mother, Bella (1902-1952).
  • His siblings: Tommy (1940-2002), Donald (1938-1938), Dennis (1926-1977), James (1920-1976), John (1929-1975), Mary (1927-2009), and Bridget (1933-1998).

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his four children:

  • Tom of Hudson, Florida.
  • Joe (Kelly) Boyle of Oakton, Virginia.
  • Tina (Dale) Kitchen of Chardon, Ohio.
  • Sheila (Peter) Martin of Providence, Rhode Island.

He also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Jessica, Tommy, Michael, Charlie, Brendan, Heather, Julia, and Melanie, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
