2025 St. Patricks Day Resolution on Honouring Ireland's Role in the United States War of Independence Sent to State Chairs

250th anniversary of the beginning of the American War of Independence will be celebrated throughout 2025. Draft wording for Resolutions for the American Irish State Legislators Caucus  have been sent to each State Chair which outlines the actions of some of those who were born in Ireland or who have Irish heritage who participated in the siege of Boston, Bunker Hill and the 1st defeat of the British Navy by the new US Navy.

“In May 1775, Maurice O’Brien of Cork in Ireland and his five sons struck the first blow against the British at sea. The O’Briens and a group of local fishermen in Machias Bay, Maine, captured the HMS Margaretta in a bold boarding action. When two more British warships were sent to reclaim the captured vessel, the O’Briens and their neighbours captured them as well.

At the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, Irish-born fighters and their descendants played a pivotal role. Among the names of the fallen were Casey, Collins, Flynn, and McGrath. Major Andrew McClary, born in County Tyrone, was the highest-ranking American officer killed that day, fighting valiantly until his death.

John Barry of County Wexford, later known as the Father of the American Navy, received the first Commodore Commission from President George Washington, commanding the U.S.S. Lexington.”

Ancient Christmas Traditions
That are Still Followed in Ireland

A look at some of the best traditions that you can bring into your own homes this holiday season.

Irish Christmas traditions reflect the resilience of Gaelic culture during times of suppression, preserving customs that endure today.

One such tradition is placing a ring of holly on the doors which originated inIreland as holly was one of the main plants that flourished at Christmas time, giving the poor ample means with which to decorate their homes.

All decorations are traditionally taken down on Little Christmas (January 6) and it is considered bad luck to take them down beforehand.
